FAQs

With Educatering, we handle every aspect of your school's catering needs, offering menu design, food sourcing, staff training, and comprehensive kitchen support.

All meals are cooked from scratch in your school kitchen, prioritising fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. We aim to be a trusted partner, working collaboratively with your school to ensure a seamless and high-quality dining experience.

What is Educatering?

Educatering is a child-centred school catering partner providing fresh, nutritious
meals cooked daily on-site, using locally sourced ingredients and menus shaped by
pupils, parents and staff.

How is Educatering different from a typical contract caterer?

We don’t cook off-site, we don’t use mass-produced meals, and we don’t enforce set
menus. Everything is tailored, cooked fresh, and led by your school community.

What does “Managed In-House” mean?

It means your school retains full control of its kitchen and staff, while we provide the
expertise, menu innovation, ingredient sourcing, training and support that makes
catering successful.

What kinds of schools do you work with?

We support primary, secondary, SEN, and independent schools across the South
West and beyond — adapting our service to each school’s size and needs.

FOOD & NUTRITION

Are meals cooked on-site?

Yes, every Educatering meal is prepared freshly in your school kitchen each day.

Do you use local suppliers?

Absolutely. We prioritise local farmers, bakers, growers and producers to ensure
freshness, reduce environmental impact, and support local communities.

How do you ensure good nutrition?

Menus are developed by trained professionals and benchmarked against School
Food Standards, ensuring balanced meals full of flavour and variety.

Can you accommodate allergies and special diets?

Yes. We work closely with schools and families to create safe, personalised meals
for pupils with allergies, intolerances, religious or ethical dietary needs.

Do children get a choice of meals?

Yes. Menus include multiple options and vary throughout the week. Children are
encouraged to give feedback, helping us design menus they genuinely enjoy.

MENUS & FLEXIBILITY

Who decides what goes on the menu?

Menus are co-designed with pupils, parents, kitchen staff, and school leadership,
resulting in a child-led menu that feels relevant and exciting.

Can menus be adapted for our school?

Yes. Nothing is “one-size-fits-all.” We tailor menus to your school’s preferences,
equipment, cultural mix, and dietary profile.

Do you offer theme days or special events?

We love doing these! From World Book Day lunches to seasonal celebrations, we
can plan fun, memorable food experiences for your school.

OPERATIONS & STAFFING

Do we keep our existing kitchen staff?

Yes, your staff stay part of your community. We support them with training,
professional development, and day-to-day guidance.

What happens if our school doesn’t have a kitchen?

Not a problem. Educatering can usually arrange for meals to be freshly cooked in a
nearby partner school’s kitchen and delivered safely to your site. We’ll work with you to create a smooth, reliable system that ensures pupils still enjoy high-quality, freshly prepared meals every day.

What happens if our cook is sick?

We provide reliable cover to ensure meal service continues smoothly without
disruption.

Can Educatering improve an underperforming kitchen?

Yes. Many schools come to us because they're struggling with quality, consistency, staffing or budgets. We turn kitchens around through training, mentoring and smarter sourcing.

How do you handle food hygiene and compliance?

We take care of all food safety guidance, training and paperwork, ensuring your
kitchen remains fully compliant with national standards.

VALUE & COST

Is Educatering more expensive than outsourced catering?

No. By removing middlemen and mark-ups, using seasonal ingredients, and running efficient kitchens, we can deliver better food at a sustainable cost to schools.

Can Educatering help reduce our catering deficit?

Yes. Many of our partner schools have significantly reduced or eliminated annual
losses of £10k–£25k through our support model.

Are there hidden costs?

No. Transparency is central to how we work. You always know where your money is
going, directly into ingredients, staffing and children’s meals.

WORKING WITH EDUCATERING

How do we start the process?

Simply get in touch. We’ll arrange a conversation, visit your kitchen, understand your needs, and create a tailored proposal.

How long does onboarding take?

Most schools transition smoothly within a few weeks, depending on staffing and
kitchen readiness.

What happens if things change, such as pupil numbers, dietary needs, or school leadership?

We adapt with you. Flexibility is built into our model so your catering evolves
alongside your school.

CHILDREN & COMMUNITY

How do you encourage children to try new foods?

We use tasting tables, themed days, fun activities and child-friendly education to
build confidence and curiosity around food.

Do you involve parents?

Yes, through surveys, tasting events, feedback mechanisms and regular
communication, ensuring parents feel informed and involved.

How does Educatering support the wider school community?

We promote sustainable sourcing, support local suppliers, reduce waste, and work to make food a positive, exciting part of the school day.
